Hiking In Bright – Trekking The High Country
One of the more popular attractions in Bright Victoria is the hiking. Hiking in Bright, some may say, is the best hiking experience to be had in Victoria. Period. The township is surrounded by the Victorian high country, in particular Mt Feathertop rising up 1922 meters above sea level, and providing an arduous day walk to its very compact and airy summit, or an extended two to three day walk. For those who have adequate fitness, this walk is simply not to be missed on a clear day, offering some of the best views in Victoria.
On the other side of Tawonga Gap is Victoria’s highest peak, Mt Bogong, which offers a slightly less arduous climb to its summit (although steeper but shorter in length). The summit is reached from a handful of tracks that start at Mountain Creek. My recommended route is to climb via the Staircase Spur, and descend via Eskdale Spur.
For those who are after a much more leisurely trip, and are interested in doing only small day walks, a trip into the Bogong High Plains via Mt Beauty is not to be missed. Various short walks exist, including walks to the historic huts of the high plains such as Walaces Hut, and short walks to the less prominent summits such as Mt Nelse and Mt Cope. Exposure in this area is very high, so be sure to wear sunscreen, and carry plenty of water.
